Nylon vs Polyester for Yoga Leggings: A Wholesale Buyer’s Guide

Choose fabric through a finished-garment comparison, not fibre names or a single composition percentage.

Both fibre families can work

Yoga leggings often use a nylon or polyester base blended with elastane, also called spandex. The base fibre influences the starting characteristics, while knit structure, yarn, finishing, garment fit and elastane content also matter. Nylon is often chosen for a soft hand feel and polyester for versatile performance and printing applications, but neither name guarantees quality. Compare actual samples intended for your order.

Write a fabric specification you can check

Ask for composition, fabric weight, knit construction, finish, available colours and a reference swatch. Agree whether the garment sample and bulk order will use the same fabric reference. A percentage alone does not describe stretch force, recovery or skin feel. If two suppliers quote similar blends, a wash and wear comparison may reveal substantial differences.

Match the material to the activity

For studio yoga, shoppers may prioritise softness, unrestricted movement and waistband comfort. For training, pocket security, sweat behaviour and support may carry more weight. Test these requirements in the finished garment rather than assigning one fibre to every use case. Moisture management depends on the fabric construction and finish; request relevant test evidence before advertising technical performance.

Do not use GSM as an opacity guarantee

GSM is fabric mass per square metre. A heavier fabric is not automatically opaque under stretch, and a lighter fabric is not automatically unsuitable. Check the actual colour, garment size and stretch level under consistent lighting. Also review heat, comfort and recovery: making fabric heavier solely to improve coverage may change how the customer experiences the product.

Compare after wear and washing

Use the proposed care instructions and record changes in measurements, hand feel, pilling and colour. Include more than one wearer where possible and note waistband movement during squats and stretches. For performance claims, define the test method and acceptance criteria with a qualified testing provider. Keep approved swatches and sample records so future batches can be compared to the same reference.

Frequently asked questions

Is nylon always more premium?

No. Construction, finishing and fit can outweigh the fibre label. Inspect the actual fabric and garment.

What elastane percentage should I choose?

There is no universal best number. Evaluate stretch, recovery, support and comfort for your intended activity.
